About The Artist
Mariellen ('Mariel') Baker started painting while
living in New York City, studying portraiture at the
prestigious Art Student's League in Manhattan for
several years under some of the world's master
portrait artists (Ron Sherr, Nelson Shanks, Daniel
Greene, etc.). Working from life and from
photographs, Mariellen combines penetrating “crisp”
detail with the Old Master’s technique of glazing,
which gives the painting many layers of depth.
Whether Mariellen paints a portrait, a landscape or a
still life, her work is realism at its best. Mariellen was
commissioned by the singer Pete Seeger and Robert
F. Kennedy, Jr. to paint a portrait of a local fisherman,
which is on permanent loan to Hudson River
Fisheries Museum, Pace University School of Law,
White Plains, NY.
Using her unique customization of the Old Master's
techniques of imparting many layers of transparent
glazes, she achieves not only capturing of the sitter's
personality, but the 'feel and texture' of real skin.
Her glazing techniques feature prominently in her
book that is due to be published in late 2007.
During a show at The National Arts Club in Manhattan,
an art critic referred to her work as "A migration from
the classical Old Flemish traditions to Hyper-
Realism", which accurately describes her
brilliant style. She paints vivid land and
seascapes and startlingly realistic still lifes.
She has won numerous awards for her paintings,
just recently was one of only 4 painters to be
invited to exhibit at the annual Committee For
Green Foothills Nature's Inspirations art event
(October, 2005). She recently won Honorable
Mention in the American Society Of Portrait
Artist's Annual Show ("A Grandmother's Delight").
Her works are in homes and businesses all over
the world, and a museum in New York.
Mariellen moved to California from Manhattan in
2000, having fallen in love with the magnificent
Bay Area, living just a few miles south of San
Francisco, on the California coast with her spouse
Kraig, and dog, Jack. She also has a ranch in
beautiful Valley Center, CA in San Diego County.
In addition to her book, Mariellen is currently
producing two television series on art instruction
which is aired 4 times per week all over the San
Francisco Bay Area on local channels.
Her show, "Painting With Class" won the Western
Alliance of Video Excellence Awards (the Western
Emmy's) for Best Instructional Show.
She is represented by several galleries in the US.
